The Manx Language Service

Vocabulary

In this lesson we learn how to put things in the past.

To say "I did" in Manx we use "ren mee." If you compare this with "ta mee" ("I am") you'll notice that the first word has changed. This is because "ta" means "am" and "ren" means "did," so the start of the sentence is the opposite way around to English ("ta mee" - "I am" / "ren mee" - "I did").

To say "I did not" we use "cha ren mee."

We can also say "ren oo?" to ask "did you?" and "cre ren oo?" if we want to ask "what did you do?"

We can put "ren mee" with days of the week to make fuller sentences about the past. When we say what we did on a particular day, we don't need to say "on" in Manx, we just need the name of the day. Here's some examples:

------
I swam on Friday / I did swim on Friday

cloie.png?m=1696607815 cadley.png?m=1696607822 markiaght.png?m=1696607836
ren mee cloie Jesarn
------

ren mee markiaght er roar
------
I rode a bike / I did ride a bike
gee.png?m=1696607849 lhaih.png?m=1696607858
ren mee gee
------
I ate / I did eat
ren mee lhaih
------
I read / I did read

Notice that in Manx there is just one type of sentence where English has two (for example, "ren mee shooyl" means both "I walked" and "I did walk"). You might also notice that the "my" has gone from the sentence for sleeping. That's because we're no longer saying "I'm in my sleep," we're saying "I did sleep."
